Outstanding Non-Business Achievement of the Year, Poland
The PRACTICE fellowship, ‘Workshops with a Mentor’ – a unique program of design mastery for young architects.
The PRACTICE competition, in its 2021/22 edition, was organized by the FOUNDATION at the end of March this year at the Department of Architecture, Gdańsk University of Technology. The purpose of the workshops was to come up with a design scheme for the transformation of the shop floors and slipways of the former Gdańsk Shipyard – an iconic city space with its cranes which dominate the skyline of the so called Young City. The chief Mentor of the workshops, organized with the cooperation of the Dean of the Department of Architecture, Gdańsk University of Technology, was Professor Piotr Lorens, the Gdańsk City Architect.
The jury of the competition, working together with the mentor, the tutors, and a strong team of consultants, chose five of the best designs from among twenty participants of the workshops. They proceeded to the second stage of the competition, winning stipends in the first stage, each in the total of 2000 PLN. After one month of perfecting their ideas, the finalists presented them again to the members of the jury, which decided to award the first prize, a second stage stipend, in the total of 10 000 PLN, to Cezary Adamowicz for the development of his proposal ‘SHIPYARD-SYSTEM’.
In the 2020/21 edition of the competition the winner of the stipend was Sandra Przepiórkowska for her design ‘PLASTOPIA’.
THEORY competition – we sponsor architects who publish their first books with the FOUNDATION.
The jury of experts working for the competition in 2022, has chosen, for the 9th time, the best theoretical paper, dealing with the subject of virtual reality and its ramifications for architects’ work. The paper, entitled ‘MIMESIS’, was submitted by Anna Jaruga-Rozdolska. The winner received a money prize, and is at the moment working with the FOUNDATION on getting her paper ready for publication. The text will be translated into English, and the book is getting its final graphic shape.
The winners of the 2020/21 edition were Marcin Kitala and Zygmunt Maniaczyk for their book, entitled ‘EXTRA MUROS’, published by the FOUNDATION.
For our contribution to both competitions, PRACTICE and THEORY, the FOUNDATION was nominated in 2013 by the President of the City of Warsaw in the section ‘Architectural Events’. The PRACTICE fellowship had its 7th edition in 2021/22, and the THEORY competition its 9th.
