Brief description of the architectural studio:

A studio engaged in both architecture and urbanism, striving to identify “the ties between that which is common in the individual and that which is individual in the common”.

Brief information about the project from an architectural point of view:

Local plan guidelines sited the Opera building between two parks on the site of former Orthodox and Jewish cemeteries. The competition stipulated flexibility in the use of the stage and audience area. Concept: to create links between the holy sites of the cemeteries and temples of art and nature. The natural park permeates the opera house, linking the existing centre of Bialystok and the new downtown (Sienny market) with ul. Odeska into an “Axis of Art”. Inside, the mood of classical opera merges with the contemporary multifunctional flexibility. The 16x16.5m stage has an acoustic ceiling of variable shape and height, along with the entire set of equipment to provide a adaptable basis for the various performances and audience sizes. The foyer is an internal passage with art galleries and a restaurant to allow it to function as an all-day art event space.
